Travel Itinerary for the Week of October 16th!

Ready for another adventure this week, mothers of the world?  Let’s get traveling!!!

We’re kicking off the week in New York City! Hey, why not?  Maman Aya is back and telling us about her family’s genetic issues, her decision that her family was complete after having 2 kids and her internal struggle on weaning her youngest. Moms, she needs your advice, so tune in!

On Tuesday, we’re talking about breasts!  Tara B. from Washington, USA tells the story of her first biopsy and reminds us all to do those self breast exams.  A timely post during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the states. Do those self-exams, ladies!

On Wednesday, get out your passports, as we travel over to the Middle East to visit Susie Newday of Israel! Susie’s messages of hope, inclusiveness and positivity, all while working as a nurse in a cancer ward are amazing.  We look forward to seeing what she has in store for us this week!

Hop back on that plane and take a flight to Norway on Thursday to catch up with Ambre French, our French mom living in Scandanavia! Ambre is a working mom, who hops a flight back to Paris on business every so often for business — ah, the life!

Friday we’re having a special post about World Moms’ vaccination experiences. We’ll also be talking about two important vaccination programs in developing nations — the GAVI Alliance and the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life.  It’s part of our effort to high light more social good on the blog since the Social Good Summit!

Also on Friday — fantastic news!  Our World Moms Blog founder, Jennifer Burden, will be guest posting at Mamapedia about her Halloween costumes growing up and what’s in store for her children this year.  You can also catch the post on the Mamasource Halloween page that day, too!  (Way to go, Jen!)

On Saturday, check out the Saturday Sidebar with Eva Fannon, where the World Moms give their thoughts on an important topic, and chime in with your answers to the week’s question!

CALIFORNIA, USA: Interview with Angela Y.

Where in the world do you live? And, are you from there?

I live in San Francisco, CA. Specifically, I live in The Presidio, a old military post that has been transformed into a state park. We live in newly renovated, former military housing. Living in the park gives us access to outdoor space, trees, wildlife (coyotes, raccoons, hawks, and more), all in the heart of a major city; it’s like living in the suburbs without the commute.

No, I am not from here. I am from Northeastern Pennsylvania. I went to high school with Tara B. All of my family still lives there or close by.

What language(s) do you speak?

I speak English only. I couldn’t even pretend to speak anything else.

When did you first become a mother?

Big girl was born in August 2007. Little girl came along in October 2009.

Are you a stay-at-home mom or do you work?

Something in-between. I consider myself a stay-at-home mom. Currently, I am working 3 days a week as a contractor doing my pre-children job at a major retailer’s corporate office. I am helping out during a friends maternity leave. I have a brand (more…)

Angela Y (USA)

Angela Y. is in her mid-thirties and attempting to raise her two daughters (big girl, R, 3 years; little girl, M, 1 year) with her husband in San Francisco, CA. After spending ten years climbing the corporate ladder, she traded it all in to be a stay-at-home mom! Her perspective of raising a child in the city is definitely different from those who have been city dwellers all their lives, as she grew up in rural Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) surrounded by her extended family. Angela Y. and her husband are on their own on the west coast of the United States — the only family help they receive is when someone comes for a visit. But, the lifestyle in San Francisco is like no other for them, so there, they stay! This exercise conscious mom is easily recognized, especially when she is riding around her husband-built bike with two seats on the back. And, when she’s not hanging out with the girls, you can find Angela Y. in the kitchen. She loves to cook for her family, especially dessert, and then eats some herself when no one is looking! Sneaky, mom!

CALIFORNIA, USA: Walls Closing In

I looked around at their smiling faces as I nervously fiddled with my unkempt hair.

When was the last time I took a shower? I wasn’t sure. I couldn’t remember the last time I ate, either.

I wasn’t hungry.

“Oh, Carri!” My grandma was holding him, his tiny hand wrapped around her finger. “He’s beautiful and he’s such a healthy boy!”

I studied him from across the room as he was shuffled from person to person. His perfectly round head. His teeny toes. Those skinny chicken legs.

Blake: The newest member of our family.

They were excited to meet him. To hold him. To stroke his soft skin and take in his new scent.

I wanted them to leave.

My parents. My brother. My aunt and uncle. My grandma. They had to leave.

The walls were closing in.

My thoughts. The thoughts were racing. He was going to be hungry soon. He would need a diaper change. He would spit up and need another change of clothes.

The house was dirty.

I had to do laundry.

I needed to try and sleep.

But I couldn’t sleep. The thoughts wouldn’t stop long enough.

The walls were closing in. (more…)

VIRGINIA, USA: Interview with Dee Harlow

Where in the world do you live? And, are you from there?

I was born in Thailand and have lived in so many places that there is not one place that I can genuinely say I am “from.”

At this moment, I live in northern Virginia but it is really only a pit stop until next July when my husband and I, and our two kids, will go live in Vientiane, Laos for two years. And this is after having just lived in Mexico for two years…thus is life in the US Foreign Service.

What language(s) do you speak?

I speak Thai like a six year old, English like a native speaker, can recall some Uzbek, trying to retain Spanish, and now learning Lao.

When did you first become a mother?

I gave birth to my twin son and daughter the day before I turned 42 in 2009.

Are you a stay-at-home mom or do you work?

I have been a stay-at-home mom since my children were born up until three weeks ago when I started Lao language training at the Foreign Service Institute. (more…)

Dee Harlow (Laos)

One of Dee’s earliest memories was flying on a trans-Pacific flight from her birthplace in Bangkok, Thailand, to the United States when she was six years old. Ever since then, it has always felt natural for her to criss-cross the globe. So after growing up in the northeast of the US, her life, her work and her curiosity have taken her to over 32 countries. And it was in the 30th country while serving in the Peace Corps in Uzbekistan that she met her husband. Together they embarked on a career in international humanitarian aid working in refugee camps in Darfur, Sudan, and the tsunami torn coast of Aceh, Indonesia. Dee is now a full-time mother of three-year old twins and continues to criss-cross the globe every two years with her husband who is in the US Foreign Service. They currently live in Vientiane, Laos, and are loving it! You can read about their adventures at Wanderlustress.

ILLINOIS, USA: We Need Rain

Hot and dry.

Words don’t grab it.  Roasty days, kids with sweaty foreheads and dirty nails.  Grass brown and parched enough to skewer a birthday balloon.  Sun, grand and proud and framed in abundant blue.  Pools become priceless, sprinklers work like heck.  Kids and land and plants are wildly thirsty.

School kids must bring water bottles, parents assured that at least: we won’t let them dehydrate.  A Midwestern parent says a prayer of thanks because even though it’s dry and hot, we’ve got access to water and our kids are safe.

Farmers worry on low yields.  What they worry on, so should you. Today, the average U.S. farmer feeds 155 people.* A scorching drought spells trouble for each of those folks and families.  High prices, high demand – it’s all a part of what happens when there isn’t enough.  (more…)
